Changes at the Helm for Publishers Weekly
- Jim Milliot Promoted to Editorial Director, Michael Coffey to Retire -

NEW YORK—May 12, 2014— Jim Milliot takes the helm as editorial director in the wake of Michael Coffey’s retirement from Publishers Weekly beginning in June. Coffey has been with the industry trade magazine for 26 years, since 1988, when he began as managing editor. Milliot has been with the company for 21 years, starting as the business and news editor, topics he still covers today. Coffey and Milliot have been co-editorial directors since April 2010, when PWxyz LLC, the parent company of Publishers Weekly, purchased the magazine from Reed Business Information.

“Michael Coffey has contributed a valuable editorial viewpoint to Publishers Weekly, and I look forward to continuing to guide the magazine into the future as the tides of book publishing shift and change,” says Milliot of his promotion to editorial director.

“Working at PW has been a dream job. How lucky to duly report to an office every day where American publishers are sending all their books for you to read. And being part of an industry that has adjusted to and survived the digital revolution has been particularly gratifying,” says Coffey, who will remain with the magazine as contributing editor and plans to split his time between Manhattan and Upstate New York.

Before joining PW, Coffey was editor in chief of Small Press magazine. Prior to that he served as managing editor at Station Hill Press, a literary small press in Barrytown, N.Y. He is a graduate of the University of Notre Dame and received his M.A. from Leeds University (U.K.). During his time at PW Coffey has published three books of poems, edited The Irish in America (Hyperion, 2000), a companion volume to a PBS documentary about Irish immigration to America, and written a book about baseball’s perfect games, 27 Men Out (Atria Books, 2005). His collection of short stories, The Business of Naming Things, will be published by Bellevue Literary Press in February 2015. Milliot was executive editor at Simba Information before he came on board at Publishers Weekly in 1993. A publisher of newsletters and market studies on various media segments, including trade and educational book publishing, Simba published BP Report and Educational Marketer, for which Milliot served as editor from 1983 to 1993. He served on the statistics committee of the BISG and is now a board member at IBPA. A graduate of Fordham University, Milliot is a regular contributor to various industry publications, including Bowker’s Book Consumer Annual Review, and is co-author of The Book Publishing Industry: 3rd Edition (Routledge, 2013). Milliot is frequently quoted in the general media on publishing issues. He lives in White Plains.
